At the doctoral colloquium of the Institute for Data Science, Engineering, and Analytics (IDE+A) at TH Köln, Nadir Nadirov presented results from his doctoral research on 23 July 2026 from 10:30 to 12:00. The talk was titled “An AI-Assisted Computational Framework for Intentional Mistuning and Aeroelastic Optimization of Blisks”.

Blisks are integrally bladed rotors in turbomachinery, in which blades and disk form a single component. Small deviations between the blades caused by manufacturing and material variation, known as mistuning, break the cyclic symmetry and can substantially amplify the vibration amplitudes of individual blades. Intentional mistuning turns this effect around: deliberately designed deviation patterns limit the forced response and improve aeroelastic stability. The design space of such patterns is large, however, and every evaluation requires costly structural and aeroelastic simulations. This is exactly where Nadirov’s work comes in, combining these simulations with methods from artificial intelligence into an end-to-end optimization framework.

The doctoral colloquium is a core element of the AI and Data Science doctoral program at IDE+A. It meets weekly during the lecture period and addresses the doctoral candidates supervised at the institute, with technical exchange about ongoing work at its centre. It is run jointly with the Computer Science and Data Science department of the Promotionskolleg NRW (PK NRW) and the Graduate Centre of TH Köln.
